Suggestion to mods [was Re: confused]

Post by MikeA »

Is it possible to make threads expire so that they cannot be resurrected after a set period, such as a month or two? Anyone who needed to refer to a discussion in a an old thread could still link to it if they wanted.

Like other in this thread I find the sudden reappearance of old threads confusing and annoying. (This is a separate issue from threads still being treated as new even if the latest post is deleted -- it's still confusing even if there is a new post there.)

Thanks for your enquiry.

Yes, confusion certainly can be caused by the resurrection of ancient threads but as there's nothing in the forum software to perform the operation you describe it would require customisation by us.

And there's the rub, as our current 'to do' list is already nightmarishly long and adding to it risks being self-defeating beyond a certain point. We're happy to bear your suggestion in mind though.

The key word is 'removed', as the posts concerned were removed (hidden) rather than deleted outright. Given that their content is of no intrinsic interest they have now been deleted and consequently returned to their original positions (except one, for reference purposes).

Sorry for the confusion. In future, where possible, posts will be deleted rather than removed which will help to keep things in good order.
