Yes. Toys for the boys (in blue). Tazers they are called. They fire two darts into the victim and then electricutes them with 50,000 volts (I am guessing the amperage must be very low to avoid instant death).
I just hope they only use them when faced with someone who is a direct threat or armed with a knife or other weapon and not on loudmouth harmless drunks like me. I was talking to a plod at work a couple of years ago who openly admitted he often uses his CS gas on people as a preemtive measure (especially if he is crewed up with someone "who doesnt throw his weight around" ) ie just incase they start putting up resistance or even if they look as if they might be trouble. Its only supposed to be used against violent or threatening people but the police soon realised its a nice tool to make bog standard arrests easier. If a member of the public used a CS spray it would be classed as a section 1 firearm and a serious imprisonable offence but they use it as soon as someone looks at them in a funny way and there have been deaths caused to asthma sufferers.
Remember that 50 odd year old bloke in London who was taking a chair leg to his sisters to fix her chair when the police pulled up and shot him dead believing his chair leg to be a gun. Trigger happy shits. They didnt even lose their jobs never mind get prosecuted.
