Baise Moi can also be interpreted as "rape me".
I've just been watching it - big fan of Karen, Coralie and Raphaella anyway (all have done several films with John Root) - wow - loved the film, pity some of the cuts break up the action in places, 11 seconds might not seem a lot but flow is important in a film as tightly paced as this one
all the same its a groundbreaking movie - kudos to Coralie Tringh Thi and Virginie Despentes for having the "balls" to make it

I wouldn't call a bunch of women behaving as violently and senselessly as a men are capable of, 'ground-breaking'......
Maybe it's just me...

but I personally find what I hear about the fim quite disturbing... certainly doesn't sound like wholesome entertainment...
And to think that the feminists and moralists object to porn because it supposedly "corrupts", supposedly promotes violence... their arguments are utterly groundless anyway, but it really does fly in the face when you have a film like this on general 18 release.

its the way real explicit sex is introduced into a "mainstream" film that I was referring to as groundbreaking - as others have stated too - not the plot per se - it goes way beyond the awkward coyness of Romance and Intimacy
- not that I think the plot is rubbish - I don't - it is quite daring and I enjoyed the film myself

I was profoundly depressed, both by the (intentionally) depressing picture it presented, and the pointlessness of the whole effort.

It was not suppossed to be wholesome entertainment, a light hearted romp or a feelgood movie. It was intentionaly disturbing. It was no more a promotion of violence than any number of mainstream gangster movies such as Goodfellas. The difference was it also contained explicit sex which seems to be causing a few posters to be concerned. Just because it had explicit scenes in it does not make it porn IMHO. Are we saying violence is fine as long as there are no explicit sex scenes?
This is precidely my point Magoo...

I'm saying the whole thing flies in the face of all arguments against the removal of restrictions on porn... They (feminists, puritans etc) say that porn promotes violent sex offences, that it corrupts etc, etc... so how do they explain away a general release under an 18 certificate for this...

I suspect that they might try to argue that a serious art film would be less likely to promote antisocial behaviour in its audience than a run of the mill porn film. Its a widely held beleif that porn has no context in which the sex is set and therefor is more likely to produce sexual crime. Its rubbish of course but the powers that be seem to suggest that sex taken out of any context is the problem.
The position of the censors for hundreds of years in this country has been that its ok for educated people to see explicit material but not the plebian masses. Remember the Lady Chatterly obscenity trial where the lead counsel said to the jury "imagine if your servants were to read this stuff". In a similar vein works of explicit art from the greeks and romans held in our museumns were only allowed to be seen by arty types and not the public. Many films that were banned were still allowed to be shown to academics and media cunts at screenings at arty cinemas on the south bank. Its that old establishment arguement that we plebs cannot control our urges and yet these critics/academics can. So we need protected from porn because we are too thick to be able to control our sexual urges and might run amok raping everyone in sight. Unlike the elite who can be trusted to see this stuff and not become a danger to society.

Apparently so.
And BTW, you've already heard my contention that the 'oh, this violence that I'm showing in such graphic detail, isn't it awful, let this be a warning' school of film-making is nothing of the sort: it's simply wish-fulfilment by twisted fuck-ups in love with violence.
