My best advise would be to purchase a panasonic dvd recorder cheapest option is a panasonic dmr e30 at the moment cos its just been discontinued but the e50 is the same functionality.it uses dvd ram media which is the most veresatile much more so than the phillips dvd plus and records brilliantly. The playback options are excellent to its as good as a ?300 dvd player it can be multi region too with a software update by most dealers .I f you look around the dmr e 30 can be picked up for around 330 and the 50 around the ?375 you currently get 3 dvd's and 6 blank rewritable discs too (the new offer announced this week). I have over ?20k's worth of home cinema gear and is the best bit of gear I ever bought look at www.avfoums.com if you need more advise.

panasonic dmr e30

points against: dvd-r format is not universal, dvd+r is better, can hold a bit more data - the only real structural differences I've found between dvd-r and +r is that a +r has a AUDIO_TS folder (usually empty). And if this is recorded on a dvd+r especially with UDF1.02 than it should play on about 99% of players (I hope).
the dvd-ram format is a bit limiting.

Latest dvd recorders will record with dvd+r.

The picture was not in B&W, the colour was fine - it's just that it had noticeable flicker compared to the PAL side of the disc. The DVD player was set to NTSC and RGB, and connected to the TV by SCART lead to the RGB enabled SCART socket.

Thanks for all the replies.

For a top class machine look at Sony. Sony had a reputation, like Technics for putting too many features on their kit and not enough performance. This has now been reversed, any Sony machine over ?300 will be a belter.
