A common complaint - but think about it. Fictional characters commenting upon (and thus partly intergrating with) 'the real world' would only underline their ficticiousness and possibly undermine the fictional world they inhabit and are trying to bring conviction to.

To put it another way: is Coronation Street unconvincing because Newton & Ridleys isn't actually available?

Acting on stage isn't acting at all...it's just shouting.
