What's really pointless, EJ, is that Sky is televising the event. Still, we should be grateful it wasn't Channel 4---or it'd be getting the Big Brother treatment.

There are many public events I fail to understand. Why do people queue outside Buck Palace at various royal events? Is it so they can tell their granchildren the story ("Yeah, you told us that crap already!") And as for standing in line for hours waiting to file past a coffin---bizarre!

Or maybe I'm missing the point.

Caractacus....folks stand out side Buckingham Palace cos they are Royalist. Mind you many are tourists who want to see the Royals cos our Royal family has a bigger following overseas than it does here. Yes there is a sence of 'we were there' in it all but ain't that for a lot of things. Folks have gone to see David Blaine cos they want to say 'I was there'. I think the whole stunt is silly, but other folks think other wise. Such is life I guess!!

As for fileing pass a coffin, it's a mark of respect which a lot of the older generation still believe in as they were brought up VERY differently to the younger generation today.

The coffin practice is usually to make sure the bastard's really dead, I imagine.

No disrespect intended, Wink Wink, but I find that (and particularly the open coffin viewing of the body) rather grotesque. But no doubt, as usual, I'm out of step with things.

I know what you mean Caractacus.......in some parts of the world it's all part of the process of an offical lying in state of some leader.

No your not out of step......just things are gone in different ways elsewhere.
