The reasoning at the time is because he thought people might somehow connect it with his earlier Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I think it might have more to do with the fact that the book was published as List Stateside. For the reasoning behind that, you'd have to ask the publishers.

True. But it won the Booker prize in '82 as Schindler's Ark and was immediately brought to Spielberg's attention. He then widely voiced an interest in filming it. The book was then retitled Schindler's List for its US publication a year later. But did Steve have a hand in this? Who can say.
