Thanks Deuce. I've now tried variations on the same fix and none of them work. But further searches on windows newsgroups found others with the same problem who also found the standard fixes hadn't worked.
Eventually, Bingo, a couple of software suggestions including
It's free and it works.

I can't remember how I got there (Microsoft's website is so confusing) but I can strongly recommend the IE6 newsgroup microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser
I found the answer in about 5 minutes of browsing through the posts.

I personally never visit microsoft.com
IMHO a lot of the things that are problems for us don't interest them because it doesn't generate any revenue

Apparently annoyances.org came about because of all the frustration with microsoft.com and their so called support arm.

Write it in plain language and the average mug might understand which would be a bad thing for microsoft.com if you read between the lines

thanks for the links

cheers

Another thing to do Mart, is to open a new window, then whatever size it is, use your cursor to drag the window to full size!, it should then remember next time you open it, I think ID touched on it.........

Teach your Grandmother to suck eggs Lizard....lol
That's the fix that wouldn't work this time. There are are about 3 variations and none of them fixed the problem. As I said in my last post, it apparently didn't work for other posters on that Microsoft newsgroup. But the freeware did.
