Apple is supposebly better and the issues about compatibility are slowly being eroded

As an Apple user said on here you can actually download a windows version compatible to your Apple computer

Think Bill worked for IBM before going solo from what I can gleam

As for who's idea the PC was its anybodies guess

I'm sure intellectual property is being stolen every day we live and will forever in a day

Forget Microsofts internet explorer and go and get the Mozilla browser ....

This is a much safer browser for surfing. i can't believe people are still using IE with all it's security problems.

Many thanks to all who have posted!!!

I have done a full virus check and spyware check and found nothing?

My isp is aol and I never use their web for browsing but thought I would give it a go as I thought IE was the main problem. After about three clicks I got a smiliar message as to that when using IE. This time it said aol instead of IE.

I know that with XP you can do part system restore by going back a few days and I have done so, but the problem remains??

Where's that bloody lump hammer....that will sort it!!!

The reason there are so many problems with PCs is the openness of the PC platform.

When IBM first designed the PC they tried to source it from existing
suppliers and made the design very open. The current PC technology,
although it has moved on, is still the same as it was in the early 1980s.

If you think about it, you can build a PC yourself, and choose from
hundreds of different components - motherboards, processors, memory,
hard disks, graphics cars, sound cards, CD drives, DVD drives etc etc etc.

Now when you put all those parts together Windows has to try to get
it all to work. Of course Windows is extensively tested, but it has never
been tested on a PC exactly like the one you have just built.

For example, a processor speed is measured in MIPS. That is Millions
of (computer) Instructions per Second. Modern CPUs can do many
MIPS, not sure what the latest number is.

So when you do something simple like opening Word, under the
covers the computer is doing Millions of computer instructions.

Also data is moved around the computer at amazing speeds. The
motherboard, which is the heart of the PC, moves data from the hard
disk to the cache, from the cache to the CPU, and back again, at
speeds measured in microseconds.

Also remember that the first versions of Windows came out on 3
diskettes, whereas it is now a CD, and install of XP takes about an
hour. Once installed it is about 2 gigabytes of data. That is is a hell
of a lot of software that could go wrong.

The reason Apple suffers from less problems is that their platform
is less open. I do not think it is that easy to build your own Mac,
certainly not as easy as it is to build a PC.

Also, Apple design and build the hardware, and also design and build
the software (Mac OS) so it is tighly coupled and easier to test.

To be honest with the complexity of the PC platform I am amazed
it evers works at all.

If it is not a virus then ensure you keep your Windows platform
up to date. It is easier to do if you have broadband, but do the
following.

In IE select Tools, then Windows Update.

After a few screens it will eventually list all the fixes it thinks
you need. Many of them will be security fixes and well worth
installing.

Start to install them. You do not need to do them all at once,
you can do a few at a time.

Once you have installed all the fixes, go back to the option
now and again to check if there are any new fixes.
