A diabolical film, apart from The White House getting blown up.
I cringe at the Presidents rousing speech to the troops

Diabolical, yes, yet sadly taken as a serious piece of cinema in certain quarters (there's a BFI guidebook already on sale). It's the vile xenophobic overtones that stand-out though - for 'alien' read 'illegal alien', a growing social concern for the US at the time of its release. That exploding White House symbolises the undermining of the economy/constitution from such, apparently. "Welcome to planet earth" says a beaming, E.T.-biffing Smith. Welcome to America, more like. See also Men In Black for a sly take on immigration control. They don't just throw these things together, you know.

Sad to say some critics rated it as a decent Sci-fi flick like Aliens

Reminded me of Star Ship Troopers for some reason
Now that was a diabolical film

There is a school of thought that Starship Troopers was an ironic dig at the septics by director Paul Verhoeven. The lovely Denise Richards was asked by a UK film mag whether she and the rest of the cast were aware of that. "I don't think it was having a dig at America," she said. "That'll be a no, then," said the mag.

I think Charlie's brain lurches into action occasionally. Still, let's just hope the baby got her looks, none of his addictions and neither of their brains.
