Remember the Poll Tax riot & the girl being run over by a Police horse, that's when the Tories found out how unpoplular the poll tax was & it cost the a lot of votes.

Yep 1990 steve. The end of the Thatcher era.

Seems like only yesterday since I saw all this but it's 14 years ago now:

Damn, I thought I would stir up a hornet's nest on the subject of the poll tax. What caused the problem for the Tories was the minutiae of the system and the excuse it gave to lazy bludgers who didn't like working or paying taxes of any kind. Where those people think the money for Council services comes from is a mystery.
The American Revolution had as one of its rallying cries "No taxation without representation". Today it ought to be "No representation without taxation". I've deliberately decided not to try to register as an expat voter because I don't pay any UK tax now.

We've got councils like that in Australia

Charging like Wounded Bulls and providing the same services that other Councils provide for a third of the price

Its no surprise when you see these same councils watering reserves in 40 degree heat at Midday during summer.Like throwing money down the drain

cheers
