You dont need to tell me that Droogy, I never went to Uni, the rest of my family did, a lot of my past and current friends did, I spent my time doing other things far more exciting, I have NO regrets, and can appreciate your points, simply trying to point out that getting a degree doesn,t gn,tee you anything these days.

I agree about tradesmen- but I was addressing the tpoic of degrees, with as large a shit-stirring spoon as possible. Crime is another 'growth industry', especially white-collar crime with its piss-ant sentences: I'd certainly advise any young person to give it serious consideration.
And re your law degree point, those legal execs are some of those who I put in the 'badly-paid' category.

This is a good point, about a degree not necessarily tying you into a future career (although it often seems to)- pure research, the joy of knowledge-
acquisition and all that. Employers often say that the subject of a degree doesn't matter (and it might not in 'personnel', 'management consultancy' or some such numinous occupation), being more an indicator of general intelligence and education- but I don't know how often this is mere pious cant.
I'm not actually against Media Studies as a course- more that it doesn't actually QUALIFY you for anything- and we can live without media people rather better than without doctors or (through gritted teeth) lawyers. It's partly that that convinces me that deregulation of universities is the best route forward for tertiary education- though most vice-chancellors would be terrified at the prospect of actually having to SELL their wares to prospective students.......

I agree BUT don't forget that Media Studies isnt luring away students from Medicine...most media studies people probably wouldntve gone to uni or wouldve been doing something else

A friend of mine is high up in a major building firm. He tells me in Sheffield, there's four serious firms, but only enough staff for about 3 1/2 of them. As a result, everytime one of them wins a major contract, they have to poach staff from the other firms, and of course, the only way they can do this is offer them more money. This means that Sheffield is full of labourers earning ?30K, whilst a good craftsman joiner or brickie can command ?60-70K.

Wages the media studies brigade can only dream about.

If you patented that machine, you'd make a fortune.

....either getting drunk in the sun, or doing a proper job.
Either option being more useful to themselves and society.
Which is what I did (albeit more by accident than design)- bugger around Europe for 5 years getting pissed, then back to Uni in my 30s, where I actually knew why I was there.
