I still think its one of the truly great war films and possibly the best NAM film , yes the buffalo does get hacked for real and when I saw it at a London Film Festival on a big screen it was even harder to watch (Id already shit myself when the Tiger jumped out ) as for saying it was unreal
I think you should read " Tim Page's NAM " (As a photo-journalist, his legendary status extended to his life being becoming the basis for the photographer character in the film Apocalypse Now, played by Dennis Hopper.) and you can read about the real Robert Duvall Character , the scene when a black soldier is being taunted by a Vietcong who is shouting abuse all night and then the black soldier aims and fires an incendiary device , you hear it go off ..... and no more shouting ...... shudder , is real.

2 tours in the Marines .... wow that must of been tough , the whole war seems like a Hell to me, fighting in jungle with an enemy that can just disappear. As for the film you do have to take into account that its based on a book written about the Belgium Congo though. I remember a part in Tim pages book when he go's out to a US camp that is totally isolated and on one side of the camp is a rock face with a Vietcong sniper holed up, well hidden and always shooting , but the Marines kinda of respect him as much as hate him , one day the brass send in a helicopter to bomb what they think is his position and they explode and destroy what seems like half the rock face , after the dust settles they think he's dead but then they here a shot and the whole camp gives him a big cheer .......!?!
Has anyone read about Errol Flynn's son Seans exploits ?
( I bet I know someone who knows a song about him though )

Elton is quite correct, there IS a song about this photographer who disappeared in 'nam.
Sean was a hippy and lived in Paris and got a job as a photographer. By all accounts, his work was very good, but his lifestyle out there caused concern, especially him venturing off for assignments.

Check out Combat Rock by The Clash for this song, as well as an absolute classic on the same album called 'Straight To Hell' which somes it all up with the title alone

The West London of my youth is now on dvd
