Good casting is a plus for sure
King Kong played by a man in a suit is far better than Animated figures conjured up on the computer
I've never understood why someone hasn't turned Bob Newharts Joke about the Watchmans first day on the job encountering king Kong on the building into even a short story
A far better story

King Kong
Re: King Kong
Well, you seem to know the story (I don't), and you have a captive audience here, so.............let's all hear it..........
"a harmless drudge, that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the
signification...."

Re: King Kong
The basic story is a conversation between the nightwatchman(1st night on duty) asking his Boss via the phone how to remove King Kong from the building.Of course as all good bosses do he's referred to the manual
You really need to hear and see it to appreciate it fully
I used to have it on video
If memory serves me correctly I sent Magoo a Video eons ago with about 5 or 6 similar ludicrous sketches
Of course the kicker is Bob Newhart was an accountant disproving the fact that they are boring and unfunny
cheers

Re: King Kong
'King Kong' is from 'The Button Down Mind of...' LP from 1965 and is another Newhart gem. I know Newhart will be an acquired taste for some but for me he's a near-genius. There's a recent double CD compilation out which is superb ; called 'It goes something like this..'
Seems to me the 1960s were a real golden age of tv and radio comedy in the US. I don't suppose anyone on this forum remembers the writer/comedian Bill Dana and his comic creation Jose Jimenez ? Especially the sketch Jose the Astronaut.

Re: King Kong
Even funnier than Newhart is the Woody Allen cd 'Stand Up Comic'
This is a compilation of 3 LP's of material from the 60's when he did stand up in nightclubs and it is one of the funniest things I've ever heard.
The famous Moose sketch is probably the highlight.
"Here's a good example of oral contraception - I asked a girl to go to bed with me and she said no"
I shall have to get another copy from Amazon as I lent it to my brother and he took it with him to Thailand where he now teaches.

Re: King Kong
Newhart had some of the most original ideas I've ever heard and showed that if you don't need to resort to profanity if your material and timing are excellent
Too many of todays comics go straight for the f word
to make up for their short comings(not including Billy Connolly who afterall just tells stories)
I particularly liked the way Newhart dealt with a live audience that thought his Driving Instructor sketch was sexist towards women...started talking in Chinese paused and gave them the option of 8 for minutes of this or a woman driver-got more laughs than the gag
Thanks for the CD pointer
cheers
