The Scottish ancestry bollox is all tied up with the Clans nonsense and phoney plaids.
Why anyone would want to honour a system of chiefs and serfs is beyond me.

Walter Scott invented different tartans to differentiate the clans when he was doing a serious amount of brown-nosing to George IV during a visit to Edinburgh. Still, if it keeps the tourists occupied . . . .

As for the serf and chiefs argument, this is one Scot who believes that Culloden was a major victory for Scotland. If Monsieur Stuart and his lot had been successful, it would have been decades of civil war throughout these islands. As it was, the central belt was allowed to continue its rise to prominence, and Edinburgh and Glasgow became centres of enlightenment for much of Europe and, due to emigration, the colonies.

The reward for fighting for their clan chiefs for many clansmen was to have their descendants sold into slavery or thrown off the land by those patriarchs who were supposed to protect them. The romantic idea of the Scottish clan system is all bollocks.
