I agree with The Last Word - I reckon about 90% of my record/cd collection comprises musicians who consider themselves "serious" and I find the Darkness a good antidote to all the manufactured crap (e.g Pop Idol etc) that's in the charts these days.
One of the worst concerts I ever went to see was Eric Clapton at the Royal Albert Hall in the early nineties, and I'm a huge fan of his recorded output. There didn't seem to be any sense of excitement at all.
Just because their music does have references to Queen and other bands doesn't make them any better or worse then all the other artists that have "nicked" stuff from what's gone before. I enjoy Cigarettes and Alcohol by Oasis as much as Get It On by T Rex even though Noel Gallagher nicked the riff from Marc Bolan.
As a non-musician, I don't want to get into the "that's really easy to play" debate - it's the emotional impact that matters.
The Darkness to be honoured
Re: Darklife
Hey I agree with your last comment I wasnt playing into the "its easy to play" thing at all. I just think they are too mainstream to be a proper rock band. I mean they are as known as any pop stuff and its not because they are so great its all about industry/hype and image. Hey, you're all free to listen to what you want but 95% of darkness fans are the same people who like whatevers new basically...whether it be eminem or some new pop band.

Eh?
'I just think they are too mainstream to be a proper rock band.'
Unlike the non-mainstream Queen, Led Zep, AC/DC, Metallica, Manics...and so forth? Jarvis Cocker - in a rare moment of illumination - once said the mainstream is there to be improved.
'95% of darkness fans are the same people who like whatevers new basically'
Will you be thinking that when your debut opus goes top ten?

Re: Eh?
nah man Im not aiming for the kinda stuff they have been aiming for. Im a Mr Bungle fan for fuck sakes!!
But at least I intend to get my "debut" out before im nearly fucking 30 for christ sakes. It should be a good album if they had about another 7 years on most bands to write material! Dont forget their reservoir of past 70s rock to borrow from is more vast than most as well.
Oh and please dont turn this into a "you're just another jealous wannabe" cos im really just not. I do my thing and ignore everyone else. Im not even against them, im just trying to be the voice of reason with regards to the darkness both online and in real life. Almost everyone I know offline either really dislikes them or use to like them but is tired of the whole joke already.
As for your claim about the other bands, well bands like Muse, RHCP, Guns N Roses, White Stripes etc all got into the top 10 albums recently along with many other rock bands with audiences all predominantly into that kinda thing. Darkness fans ARE just the people into whatevers going at that exact time, im not saying theres anything majorly wrong with that but it would be hard to deny.
ah my beloved Queen.

I will say that whilst I detest Darkness, I do doff my hat to them for actually PLAYING their instruments and aren't manufactured shite that usually dominate the charts.
As for White Stripes, these are excellent, although they are predomently Blues Scales riffs, but at the same time, VERY refreshing. And Megs tits are well worth a mention.
RHCP?......................pure genius
As for riffs and solos, I know EXACTLY where ID is coming from. I'm more of a rhythm guitarist myself........when I can be arsed

Re: Eh?
Thanks for understanding where I was coming from Ace. Im not saying I couldve written the darkness' riffs, im just saying that with the old bands like acdc writing that style first its not too bad to try and work in that style
Never underestimate the rhythm guitarist, some are chord lads but a band like GNR wouldntve been what they were without izzy's writing on rhythm and lets face it, how often in a classic/great rock song is it the lead guitar that makes the song brilliant....not that often, its usually the main riffs
I wil just take this opportunity to clarify my apology to darkness' fans, part of its a chip on my shoulder of being from Norfolk and wanting to do something with guitar....whatever I do/whatever level I go to people are always gonna think of the darkness from now on, specially with my penchant for good solos.
#i can dim the lights and sing you songs full of sad things, we can do the tango just for two, i can serenade a gentle play on your heart strings, be a valentino just for youuuuuuu#
freddie mercury,....a true "genius" musician I think, depending how you define genius because in reality there have prob been no real geniuses in popular music..?
