The Romans had around 170 public holidays a year. Bliss!

We do, averaged over the year, 3x 12-hr shifts a week, so I suppose that makes me only semi-employed, at about 160 days per annum.

Actually, with the amount of actual work I do, make that quarter-employed.

.......unless you happened to be a Christian, in which case Public Holidays were to be avoided at all costs..........

We need more public holidays, but spread over the year. The only downside for me is the ritual infestation of visitors to our part of the world on each one, but it' a small price to pay.

Europe in large part has more than we do ; some countries take a much more relaxed approach to holidays and time off. I'd like England to have April 23rd as a public holiday, the Welsh with March 1st and the Irish with March 17th etc.,

I must say it really gladdened my heart to know the essential workers of the Inland Revenue have plenty of leisure time in order to maintain the extraordinarily high standards of performance they always seem to show with my tax affairs.

It is true that many other countries have more public holidays. I certainly am not advocating a cut in peoples' holiday entitlement. I am suggesting they should have the ability to take days off when they wish. Not ones forced upon them by parliament.

More important for our legislature would be first to abolish the practice in some jobs where any leave taken is unpaid.........

Surely that defeats the whole point of the public holiday

Its not meant to just be a day off work but to commemorate something

In OZ we have about 6 Public holidays every year which mean very little to me other than a break in the rat race

The Queens Birthday
Adelaide Cup Day - Horse racing
X-mas
Easter
Australia Day
Anzac day

By very little I mean I've never attended a commemorative service for any of them, and that includes the horse race

They also mean very little as you get 52 weekends of a year - 104 days
plus annual leave on top again of 30 days...throw in a dozen sick days due to important engagments and 6 public holidays hardly rate a mention
unless they fall on a friday or a monday and make a long weekend

Maybe I should just forfeit the days off but i wouldn't want to go against the grain

cheers
