Aren't "trailor trash" your equivalent?

I guess that trailer trash would be the equivalent although they don't seem to manifest themselves in the same way as chav scum do in the UK.

Possibly for the simple reason that this country's so vast and huge that you don't get the same noticeable concentration as you would in a small English town.

And of course, a sentence of 7-and-a-half years will in reality be closer to half that.

So then, just over three years in nick for killing a man while trying to rob his car.

The hand wringing do-gooders will claim, as they always do, that there's victims on both sides of this crime, but the poor chap going on holiday with his wife didn't have a choice did he?

'Why is it 'smug' to take the piss out of scum who steal, mug, destroy, etc, etc...'

It's certainly smug in the self-congratulating 'look at us, aren't we cool laughing at the proles' sense, much in the tradition of wanky first-year students who've yet to grow up. If anything, chavscum is a perfect example of the sort of casually nasty humour best left in the schoolyards. That and the fact that grown adults took time and effort to put up the damn thing certainly gives more ammo to those complaining about the increasingly infantilised adult society we're allegedly creating.

"The response to the problem of vermin like Chavs is typically British. Lots of tut-tutting and piss-taking, but that's as far as it goes."

Which nationality's response to "vermin" do you prefer - is the good old-fashioned Germanic solution more to your liking? Lets face it - its the one who considers that an entire economic class is "vermin" who has the real problem.

"Why is it 'smug' to take the piss out of scum who steal, mug, destory, take, and generally pollute wherever they live?"

Who says that they do this? - I thought that they wore Burberry, watched daytime TV, claimed benefits and wore Lizzie Duke jewellery. Thats why its a piss-take - its mocking a social stereotype, like accusing the upper-classes of being chinless wonders called Rupert.

Its only when the piss-take is bizarrely perverted to suggest that there is an identifiable "in-bred" race of people who can be blamed for society's problems - they are "vermin" who need to be "dealt with" possibly by way of enforced medical procedures - then the real unpleasantness begins.

So on the one hand you've got people mocking the fashion-sense and values of the "underclass" - a bit smug but hardly evil. On the other hand you've got those who believe that people are poor because they are naturally or genetically inferior - they are also pre-disposed to be violent criminals, this has nothing to do with them being poor though, its just their natural state. There is nothing that can be done to improve them, they are beyond redemption, they were born poor and violent they will remain poor and violent - the decent members of society need to protected from these "vermin". The state should give as much freedom as possible to "us" - it should use whatever means are necessary to keep "them" under control.

Now - do you see why the British piss-take is better than your alternative?

"casually nasty humour"

The best humour usually is nasty.

Maybe you're taking chavscum too seriously, it's a lighthearted dig at people who you may see as less fortunate as others but in reality are probably having the time of their lives with their seeming endless supply of money (from benefits and crime) and all the time in the world to indulge their hooligan ways.

So sorry Spook, of course all Chavs do is wear Burberry and watch daytime tv. Of course they never ever steal cars, ride them around estates and set them on fire, or in the case at the top of this thread steal cars and kill a man in the process.

No, they're just mischievous scamps who should be patted on the head as they collect their next handout from the state.

"Of course they never ever steal cars, ride them around estates and set them on fire, or in the case at the top of this thread steal cars and kill a man in the process."

Yeah - thats right, there's an entire social class of people that are pre-disposed to stealing cars and killing people.

You are defining as a chav someone who commits a violent crime. Other people point out to you that a chav is actually a member of a particular socio-economic group. You then come to the bizarre conclusion that all members of that group are pre-disposed to committing violent acts and you think that this gives you carte-blanche to describe them all as "vermin".

I assume that every time someone of your own particular socio-economic group commits a crime, you immediately turn yourself in at the local police station on the assumption that, as the criminal dressed and spoke in a similar matter to you, its only a matter of time until you commit a similar crime.

"No, they're just mischievous scamps who should be patted on the head as they collect their next handout from the state."

What should happen to people who collect "handouts" from the state. All those people claiming pensions and childrens tax credits - should they all get a good kicking, the grasping scum. Or is it only certain handouts - the ones that you are never likely to claim - that are a blight on society and an indictment of those who claim them?

Sorry, Chavscum left a nasty aftertaste for me. Scratch away the alleged 'light-hearted' humour(?) and what are you left with?

'....people who you may see as less fortunate as others but in reality are probably having the time of their lives with their seeming endless supply of money (from benefits and crime) and all the time in the world to indulge their hooligan ways'

You almost sound envious there.
