Not so Ace- o! I too was pleaed to see Chelsea win something, and they were the better team, I dont really give a flying fuck for football/ers, but I would always support a British team that was banging on the door of Europe for a title, my only issue with Chelsea, was that that nice man Mr Ranieri was treated like shite, and that (I,ll go where the best money is Kenyon) is on board.
Good luck to all English teams left in Europe, including Stockport County....

Sounds like your describing Liverpool of 2001
Ultra defensive with the occasional counter attack...won them 3 trophies in that season so you can't really call it a boring style CAN YOU?
Unfortunately Defense is what wins titles & trophies
Look at Greece in Euro 2004....boring as batshit to watch but they won it by playing stifling defense as a team
cheers

a strong defense has always been the starting point of all the great sides, even back to the Liverpool of the 70's was built on a strong defense, Hanson, Neal, Lawrensen et al

Yes I can call it boring because that's exactly what it is.
Liverpool WERE boring under Gerard Houllier. We played only on the counter, often played with two banks of 4 and attempted to have 10 men in front of the keeper when we didn't have the ball even at home.
It is dire to watch but every football fan would rather see their side win 1-0 rather than lose 4-3 in a cracker and I'm no different.
I agree with you that it wins trophies. I said that in my post. But from a neutral point of view (looking at Chelseas season as a whole) then they aren't pretty to watch and that as I said was my point.
In the pub where I watched the game then about 90% wanted Liverpool to win so as to turn the tables and do to Chelsea what they have done to others.
I do expect Chelsea to go on and win the Championship but they won't win many (neutral friends) along the way.
Do Chelsea and their fans care about that?
Not one bit and nor should they.
Would I like to swap Liverpool's position for Chelsea's no matter what the style of play?
Of course I would.
However Pele called football the beautiful game and I don't think it is anymore.
Others may disagree.

And the Arsenal side with Adams, Bould, Winterburn and Dixon.
The great Milan side had Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Donadoni but the back four of Tasotti, Costacurta, Baresi and Maldini was the strong foundation.

With the exception of the Liverpool v Alaves final in 2001 5-4
Houillier must have been kidnapped or on drugs
Funny but I seem to recall the great A C Milan making everyone a defender when they weren't in possession but as soon as they got possession it was all out attack.
It says to me its all in the mental approach...defend when you haven't got the ball and attack when you have
England v Brazil in Seoul was a classic case of a defensive mind set
11 v 10 for 30 minutes and the 10 man team wins

I stopped watching the major finals because they always ended up either 1-0 after extra time or heaven forbid penalties.Nobody wants to be the one that makes the mistake.Apart from Zidanes miracle volley mid air most finals have very few moments that stand out

The big 14 clubs don't give a stuff about the fan base just profit

That notion died in about 1982 when the those that were showcasing their sublind skills,Denmark & Brazil got a rude awakening and exited stage left
Add on the fact that all the South American talent has drifted to Europe so their all playing the same brand of game now.Out the door with the individual skill and become just another cog in the team
Then thers the issue of TOO Much Football being played which is burning out the so called GREAT players earlier & earlier

agree with you lizard, i didn't like the way ranieri was treated and can't stand kenyon, who comes across as a very devious arsehole. have to say though that chelsea are better for having mourinho in charge.

The truth is that there aren't many great games anymore.
I am trying to think of matches from this season alone that stand out in my mind and in one minute I can only come up with the recent Arsenal and Man Utd game.
True the AC Milan team like most Italian sides at the time got everyone behind the ball whilst not in possesion but when you have that defensive platform it helps give the attacking players some reassurance.
The notion of the beautiful game isn't completely dead. Both Real Madrid and Barcelona both try to play attacking football and indeed it is apparently in the mandate of the club (Real).
Both clubs want to win but say that must be with style. It's something that Arsenal have tried to copy, successfully last year but the wheels have fallen of this season.

Golf is the beautiful game.
Football's become a scum of the earth sport.

Yes, but both clubs have to endure racist monkey chants during games these days.
The beautiful game? don't make me laugh.
