You'll encounter very little problem hand carrying your HD to most countries.

I've carried laptops, hard drives, arm loads of DVDs across borders into communist countries and there have never been any issues.

Unless you're on a wanted list you'll be pretty safe.

If you're feeling really worried, buy a huge HD (300GB). Create 4 partitions, maybe 3, 30GB partitions and a massive 200GB partition. Just before you pack up your PC, hide the 200GB partition (you can do this with something like Partition Magic and perhaps also the XP drive manager). When you get to your desination, unhide and you're all set to go, but really, you've little to worry.
