Actually oringinally slated to direct the film was Nic Roeg who did Walkabout and Don't Look Now...he wanted either David Caradine or Jack Nicholson as Ming The Merciless and Deborah Harry as Dale Arden...

The original premise of the film was that Mings power came from the God of Destruction Dyzan and that Dyzan had once foretold of the coming of a fair haired stranger from a watery blue planet through a tunnel of fire and would unite the feuding kingdoms of the galaxy and through this destroy Ming.....Sadly, due to production differences Roeg and the producer Dino De Laurentis ended in Roeg leaving the production and Hodges being brought in....at this point, De Laurentis fed up with production delays and realising that Flash Gordon couldn't really compete with the then upcoming Empire Strikes Back felt it was best to make a 'big budget, camp film' with the emphasis on the original Buster Crabbe 1/2 hr Saturday matinee serials of Flash Gordon from the 1930s....if Roeg had stayed on and got his way Im sure the film would have been challenging as it would have been spectacular.

Finally, as a note of trivia, did you know that Sam Jones who played Flash Gordon had nearly 2/3 of his dialogue over-dubbed by an English actor after filming as De Laurentis didn't 'appreciate' his tone of voice during the filming and wanted a more 'heroic' voice for the lead....(how stupid)....

Yeah Sho made some great films, the old Cannon logo at the beginning was something to get excited about back then, but it killed it for me when Rutger kicked his arse in Blind fury, whatever happened to michael dudikoff? american ninja 1 i still have on vhs, that fucking rocked back in the day, we got it off the mobile video man and swopped the spools so we could keep it!
yeah Lucinda pours something over her tits and someone licks it off in ninja 3, check it out, all I remember is a scene with ninjas in a graveyard or some shit in it as well, definitley that film Holden

I'd heard the dubbing rumour, but wasn't sure where. Thanks for the additional info. I know Roeg had been slated in, and that he wanted Debbie Harry involved---but the rest is new to me.

Sam Jones only looked like a cool dude because his sidekick Jetto was one of the ugliest Australians that ever lived Mark 'jacko-wheres me teeth' Jackson

A colourful character as I found out when I read his autobiography 'Dumb like a fox' purchased for AUS2-00 I'm still trying for a full refund...you should check out his latest DVD,'Wild Colonial Psychos',a collaboration with Australias infamous Mark 'Chopper' Read

cheers

I thought it was Jetto and not Jeddo.
That dude ruled for pure pug-uglyness.

I didn't know he was famous enough for a biography, or as your link puts it, "a national icon"!

I'll have to hunt it down.

IMDB has this to say:

[quote]
Mark Jackson is a former star Australian Rules footballer who was sacked after putting live firecrackers in the pocket of his club He has written an autobiography of his football days called "Dumb like a fox"

Known for his wacky Energizer commercials back in the late 80s. They usually ended with him saying, "Get Energizer. OY!"

The central figure of worship of a fictional Waco, Texas-based cult leader named Brother Jeb on the Australian FM radio program "The Twin Hours of Irrelevancy".

I remember the Ninja fighting in the desert at the beginning and then he gets killed.
We were supposed to believe it was Sho even though he wasn't contracted for the film...that's why the mask doesn't come off.

I'll have to dig out the VHS...the shame of it.

As for American Ninja, I loved that movie as a kid.
I downloaded parts 1,2 & 3 from bittorrent a couple months back and damn were they cheesy or what.
The second one was absolute bollocks and the third one should never have been made when they stuck David Bradley in the lead.
The dialogue, action and plot...what little plot there was...sucked big ones.

Jackson: "So you're a Ninja"
Sean: "That's right."
Jackson: "OK, let's kick some ass"

How gay?

They made 5 in total and the names of the hero kept changing.
In part 5, it became a comedy as Ninja had to look after Mr Miyagi's nephew or something.

Bastards.

Fuck Billy Drago, what about Billy Blanks in China O'Brien.

Now that guy totally fucking ruled with his kicks although not as good as Keith Cooke of the triple kick fame.
