Shearer the bloke may not be a barrel of laughs - but he has had an illustrious career.

Being by far the best player in a championship winning team.

Being England's best striker for a decade - how much more illustrious can an England striker's career be?

Being probably the best striker in Europe at his peak in the mid-90s. He was certainly a world class player at that time.

You would call Zidane's career outstanding and better than Shearer's - you would call Henry's career disappointing on the international front.

Yes he fouls a lot and he tries to ref every game - but he's had a long career and at his peak he was an outstanding player.

Spook, Thierry Henry won the World Cup and European Champinship with France. I would hardly call that a disappointing international career.

Can't recall Shearer winning anything England, even when England held Euro '96. Okay, they went out to Germany on penalties but then again how did they get through against Spain?

Well Henry was in the squad in 98 but I don't remember him making much of an impact, or even hardly playing.

Being a minor squad member is hardly a sign of having an outstanding international career.

True he did much more in Euro 2000.

But was then poor in 2002 and 2004.

Considering his outstanding play for Arsenal - I doubt that anyone would claim that he has fulfilled his potential at international level.

Was there a better striker in Europe, of proven international quality, than Shearer in euro 96?

Shearer may not have been the best player of all time - but he has had an illustrious domestic and international career.

England captain, top premiership goal scorer, first player to score 100 then 200 goals in the premiership, golden-boot winner in euro 96. What does he need to have done to have had an illustrious career - invented some better players for the England team?
