It doesn't matter to me one iota - if he is truly religious in that sense then that makes an even bigger wanker, whatever religion.

You suspect his religious leanings, as do I, but I don't think he is actually a RC. There are a lot of C of E members, priests and laity, of the "smells and bells" variety but that doesn't make them RC.
