Watching ITV's "Avenue of Stars" the other night hammered the messaage home - nobody in the entertainment world seems prepared to serve their time learning their craft anymore - all we've got is a bunch of ex-Blue Peter presenters or Big Brother celebs & 'tits-out' chavs capable of no more than presenting endless DIY/home/garden makeovers, or swanning off abroad as wannabe holiday reporters...it's bleedin' tragic really!! :(

Perhaps they'd like to but are hampered by TV companies wanting instant hits rather than nurturing talent, which leads to the copycat saturation of, as you say, endless makeover/holiday shows etc that follow in the wake of one suprise success. There's masses of space to fill in the schedules - too much probably, so anything relatively cheap, generic and quick to knock off is bound to be prominent. Not every show can be as good as Fawlty Towers say, but then each episode of that took four months just to write.

Perhaps the worst problem is when a certain talent (of sorts) does emerge, usually from the fringes, it's frequently wasted in the mainstream. C4 built up Graham Norton over several years. Poached by rivals for a fortune, he's now about as washed up as you can get. Same scenario for Harry Hill, Johnny Vaughn, and many others. It's obvious ITV are banking on Ant and Dec for the long haul, but there's still a tangible air of desperation over every contrived format they're squeezed into. It was not without irony that Avenue of Stars, itself a primetime dud, went along at funeral pace.

Look at Hollywood's walkway of STARS...then take a look at ours,a couple of NAMES,then it fades into oblivion.
This walkway of ours is a bit late coming, should have been done years ago, next it will have Jordan down as the 'greatest'...well at least we will be able to step on her.

In my opinion it's because of things like the Internet that now make "Celebrities" out of just about be anybody and you don't even need any talent. This is one of the reasons "reality" tv has taken off!

Take a look at the likes of the Big Brother Contestants: Famous for being on TV and nothing else, they turn up to the opening of an envelope and magazines like Heat, OK et all keep them in the news. There used to be A list celebrities but now the alphabet just isn't long enough!
