IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW - CHICAGO
Over-played, granted, but it is a superb song and has great musical textures

nick drakes superb, i agree. Time has told me is my favourite.
i see a darkness by will oldham is my favourite slow song. Not really a ballad or romantic. More sorrowfull and melancholy.
Best ballad would have to be solitaire by the carpenters. They are often dismissed as cheesy (which , admittedley, they are) but Karen Carpenters vocals are luxurious.

Art Garfunkel - I only have eyes for you.

10CC - Mandy

Charles Aznavour/ Elvis costello - She

Elvis Costello ( quite popular in this thread) - Good Year for the Roses.

Elton John - Thats why they call it the blues

Sting - Fields of Gold

Neil Diamond & Barbara Streisand - You dont bring me flowers

Dire Straits - Romeo & Juliet

Judy Collins ? - I've looked at love from both sides now ( i'm not sure of the title, it may be "Don't know love at all"). A real oldie

Both Sides Now - originally a Joni Mitchell song and yes, Judy Collins does a very good cover of it (she also does a very good Amazing Grace, and a sublime version of Send In The Clowns).

From myself:

Bowie - Wild Is The Wind
Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding
Johnny Cash - Wichita Lineman

yeah, thats her. apparentlly nick drake turned up at her flat one day, threw an album onto her table and said ' you should listen to this, i think youll like it', then left. She picked it up, realised it was an album not just from but by her brother, and listened to it. When she called round to see him the next day and tell him how great a musician he was, he had killed himself.
Not sure wether thats pinpoint truth, but thats what ive read. His next two albums were released posthumously. Shame, he was class.

Love that version of Solitaire - the much missed Roger Scott used to play it on his Sunday night/Monday morning show on Radio 1 before he died. Great stuff.

Also partial to the Emmylou & Sheryl Crow version of Juanita from the Gram Parsons tribute CD.
