Its all in how Islam is intepreted and put into practice but you are right the Male seems to hold the whip hand

Lets be honest there are still plenty of countries worldwide(under almost all religions)where the women is seen to be treated as a 2nd class citizen

Besides the issue of Religion & Culture theres always the ever present
Male v Female sub-plot going on

The issue of how women dress in public is the one thing that will never be agreed upon between Muslim Clerics/Radicals and the West.Just as those in the christian community have been on about dress standards since time began

Maybe if we all regress back to the Victorian Era everything will be 'Hunky Dory' between those from different backgrounds but i wouldn't bet on it.

Indeed I have, Sir. It is a saying usually invoked to gloss over the imagined or real deficiencies in one?s own appearance or the deficiencies of those third parties one is sympathetic to. However, in this instance, no amount of glossing over can obscure the fact that burkahs are particularly ugly manifestations of female sartorial style. Indeed, in Islamic tradition, that is one of the purposes of the Burkah ? to render a female unappealing in the eyes of the general male populace. But what about you? Do you find Burkah clad females attractive and stimulating? Do you get ?a right lob on? when you see a burkah wearing female out on the street? Does the sight of that black sheet with the silly ?pill box? slit make you feel all goose pimply and desirous?...No??Well then, do you know of any 'beholders' of sound mind that do find burkahs appealing??Hmmm. Thought not.


How is a piece of clothing offensive?

If it offends, it is offensive. I find burkahs repugnant. Not so much the cloth, you understand, as the absurdity and idiocy of the spectacle and also the mediaeval philosophy that underpins the wearing of such. But what really winds me up is the public sector?s bending over backwards to accommodate this sartorial aberration.

It would get rid of any faint hearted Johnny Come Latelys who think it?s now OK to indulge their sexual desires and fantasies in porn production - because they believe the Old Bill won?t come after them. The supply and production of porn would greatly diminish, but the little that was left would be much more focused and refined - back to basics, i.e., good old fucking and sucking. Punters would appreciate it more; they would get more from it. And of course it would leave the market wide open for us ?geezers of porn' to start coining it in once more. Every cloud?

Do you approve? Or would you say such a system is backward and unenlightened, not up to our superior, liberal, western way of doing things? And what about the Islamic ban on bacon sarnies? I see christian liquor store owners are having a hard time selling their produce in certain moderate muslim countries,what with the fire bombings and personal attacks its likely to drive them to drink more

All i will say is when confronted with one I treat it as i would a stoby pole or fire hydrant but I guess thats how your meant to react
Its like dressing yourself up as Cousin IT and basically says
"DONT APPROACH ME" imho

Expect a reality TV show to come along eventually where a panel of experts try and guess who's inside.

Potentially Osama Bin Laden could move around unhindered while wearing such a disguise so I suppose there is some merit in its banning

None of which seems relevant to the post. I wonder why you get so worked up about how other people choose to dress. There are two types of people: those who believe in anyone's freedom to dress, think and act as they like, and those who don't. I'm the former, you are the latter.

I believe people should have the right to wear a burka or a bikini or whatever the hell they want. I think the fact you find burkas "offensive" says nothing about burkas but much about yourself.

What other items of clothing besides burkas do you find "offensive"? Hoodies? Clit piercings? Jewish skull caps? FCUK t-shirts? Because someone does, and with just as much "logic".

You know, instead of having a laugh, I would take you much more seriously if you were prepared to address uncomfortable issues like the ones I have raised throughout this thread. If you don't, then it seems like you are running away from them, sweeping them under the carpet, because you have no answer. If you stubbornly stick to one side of the argument you loose credibility, people begin to think you are blinkered and irrational - like some of our leftie friends (not you, Carac).

Well, I find clit piercings really offensive. Hoodies are just a bit irritating ? ?cause they are wore by chavs, to be, well, chavy. Nope - you tried to switch the thread to my thoughts on Islam, shariar law etc. None of that is relevant. FYI I'm an atheist and take a dim view of religious fundamentalists, but don't have a major problem with people who believe but keep it to themselves.

The thread is about whether the burkah should be banned and I say no, on the basis that governments should not, ever tell people what they can and can't wear (hate laws withstanding).

No, I agree. But everyone will have their own idea about what looks good on women, and women have the right to look like crap if they choose, like it or not. A society that tells people what to wear isn't a free society - saw a documentary on a bunch of goths who were virtually expelled from a small American town because of the way they dress. Same issue.

So you hate burkahs, clit piercings and "chavs". And you'd like to live in a nanny state where these were all banned. You a Daily Mail reader?
