"Lets look at the facts about the last 30 years. Labour in power for 12 years, Conservatives for 18."
Yes, I'm aware of that. But what I am railing against is the culture of political correctness that came into being when the counterculture and 'Summer of Love' turned sour at the end of the 60's. The benign, laidback, hippie movement then gave way to the dour, strident, po-faced and often irrational, doctrines of feminism and political correctness in the early 70's. All this was independent of government. It was a movement of the young middle classes, the people who were at university at that time. They were not the government (but they are now). Now government and the public sector are closely wedded to the PC culture - something that they themselves brought into being during the 70's.
All I?m saying is just have a ponder on the negative aspects of PC as well as celebrating the positive aspects. If you do that then people will take you much more seriously. Anyhow, have a Merry Christmas, mart. And all the best for the New Year.

Just to clear up the 'Hull' connection. Although the atrocity took place in Sheffield I mentioned Hull because that was where the unfortunate chap was transferred to - apparently they have a specialist burns unit there. Hull is a bit of a shit hole in many places and indeed has topped national polls of the worst place to live in the UK. But maybe we best discuss that another time.
To compound the tragedy the man (the elderly couple?s son) has now died (and given the circumstances I can't help entertaining the thought that it was probably for the best). He leaves behind a sister and her children - who, unexpectedly, will not be visiting their 'nana and granddad' this Christmas day.

I wasn't being patronising, mart. I was just addressing the point you made in the reasonable, rational, thoughtful and respectful manner that I would address anyone else's point that I credited with equal intelligence and common sense. It seems sad (particularly at this time of year) that even when someone holds out an olive branch to you, you can't help but slap them in the face with it. You poor soul.

Have a good Christmas, Officer, and you too, Mart.
There are no easy solutions. Society has changed irrevocably since I was a kid and wouldn't think of cheeking any grown-up, let alone the police; when all you set fire to was freshly mown grass in fields; and when the papers weren't filled with 300 reasons to smother your kids in cotton wool and stop the world from getting to them.
In many ways things have improved. But aspects of society have broken down, and those who think they have carte blanche to act as they please are probably here to stay.
If there was a sensible answer, cleverer people than me would have suggested it by now. I can only live by my standards, my moral code, and with my conscience watching over me.
Take care, guys, and all the posters and the mods.
(PS----I should probably apologise to MacDaddy; there's a good chance he'll spend the next month religiously watching Emmerdale in the hope of spotting Sammy-Jayne. Since I've been naughty, no prezzies for me this year)

Do you really expect me to accept an olive branch from someone who continually abuses middle-class, Guardian-reading, left-wing, university graduates? Am I always having a dig at "working class", University of Life, porn producers?

I wholly endorse everything you say. . I know the police are rightly treating this as murder but I can't see the CPS proceeding with that. I bet these lowlifes end up just being charged with criminal damage.
