But they are also powerless without victims. It's a weirdly symbiotic relationship: the victim spends all their time worrying about the bully; without that attention, the bully would wither and die.

Can't recall the name of the story, but one of the great living writers, Mr ray Bradbury, wrote a tale about an adult going back to his hometown to take revenge on the boy who bullied him in childhood. Worth checking out.

Ray is a genius.

i used to get off bullying by openly admitting that if "she" sat on me she would break my back and running down the school corridors in a humouros way to escape her clutches.

she was a fat cow and it worked. abit of humour kept my dignity.

i think my humour was more over powering to her than her threats. however i still except i could be sitting here as a criple.

The chances are that your comments caused her some damage, Sandie. Sticks and stones may, and do, break bones, but the right barbed comment will echo in someone's mind and can do all sorts of psychological harm.

There are exceptions, no doubt, but most bullies are weak people hitting out so that no one will see their own weaknesses.

It wasn't a novel, Steve, just a short story. It's possible it may have been adapted for the Ray Bradbury Theatre show that was on telly some years back.

In Melbourne, met the son of one of my Dad's work colleagues here in Aberdeen.

Also, a mate of mine from Aberdeen went to Melbourne last year and met a bloke who knew me from a previous visit.

Both meetings totally by chance. Small world.
