No real need to:
Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs
Check the "Show Updates" Box
Scroll Down to Windows XP Software Updates
Highlight and Remove

Doing it the way I have described, Windows performs a rollback and creates a system restore point so it hardly de-stabilises the OS and if it does it is so easy to put right.
What you have to remember is that Windows is a bag of crap anyway. We only use it because Mac is too expensive (and iProducts are generally just shite and are only made look pretty for Mactards) and none of the software we want to use runs under Linux unless you are lucky and can get Crossover to run it. The last thing Micro$oft did that was worth buying was Windows 95.

Just set Automatic Update to allow me to select updates to instal option. Updates are then downloaded automatically, you'll get the prompt as usual and then you can check/uncheck the ones you want to instal or not. Just choose not to instal WP11 if you don't want it.
It's also best way to avoid those nasty Windows Genuine Advantage pops if you've got a hooky copy of Windows, which about half the people who've got a PC do
Net is full of people running around asking for patches to remove Genuine Advantage pops telling them they're running dodgy Windows, yet all they needed to do to avoid it was to not instal the Microsoft's Genuine Advantage checker in the first place.
