My father was in the merchant navy. Officers' wives were allowed to join their husbands for parts of the voyage. I was born 3 weeks early. At the time my mother was on board ship which happened to be in Le Havre... next stop King George V dock. If I'd been born 4 weeks early I'd have been born somewhere along the Suez canal.
