I saw an article on the news about Mel Smith, who was taking the part of Churchill in a play at the Edinburgh Fringe, saying that he had been forbidden from portraying Churchill as a cigar smoker by the poncy PC twats on the local council! This is the worst kind of revisionism ? Churchill (the greatest ever Englishman in the minds of many) had a passion for Havana cigars and a stiff drink ? but so freakin? what? He saved us from the Nazi jackboot and to misrepresent him and his peccadilloes is an insult to the man and his memory. Mel Smith was so incensed that he seriously considered pulling out of the project.

T? fuck with Edinburgh council and all those other Health 'n' Safety executive saddos. They?re all shite. In fact I wouldn?t be at all surprised if the Edinburgh council leader himself turned out to be called something like ?Shites McGregor?.

I read that it wasn't a PC measure but a safety regulation.

No, it was definitely PC gone mad.

According to the article I read about the Churchill cigar incident, they threatened to close and fine the theatre because it would have been in breach of the draconian anti-smoking regulations that are now in force in public buildings north of the border.

Yeah but where will it end once you embark down that road?!

Someone complains about a cartoon character munching on some "unhealthy" junk food and so all scenes of burger and cake eating get expunged?

Now that I DO agree with (and I'd add the ambulance-chaser law firm ads to that list as well).

Actually, the exchequer receives approximately four times as much money from smokers' taxation as it spends on treating them.

I get more and more pissed off with people on this forum who either deliberately or in ignorance get a story wrong.
Its one company who have made the decision, as is their right.

But, as ever, never let the truth get in the way of a good rant.

God knows how much NHS money is wasted on avoidable,self-inflicted illness arising from smoking, drink and drugs

I could never be a doctor, because I could never treat a 50 a day lung cancer patient with the same compassion as a 5 year old kid with a brain tumour.

Good call, but why stop at fags, drink & drugs why not include all other avoidable illnesses/injuries. Car accidents have to be someones fault, bulk of Aids sufferers are self inflicted, attempted suicides, stress related illness, could go on forever. At least smokers pay their way and if they all stopped tomorrow, there would still be the lung problems to cope with but no income to pay for it.

Mart, you might want to check out the truth yourself.....

Page nine, one viewer complained to Ofcon. They then contacted Turner who did an internal review and decided on the censorship which Ofcon support and thereby set precident to any other instances.

Quote from Ofcon: Given Turner`s commitment to adopt a precautionary approach, we welcome its review of archive material and action taken to minimise the possibility of harm.

Never let the truth of a rant about a rant get in the way...........

Mart, I get more and more tired of you constantly pouring cold water on interesting threads by implying they are not true.

Eric, I agree with everything you have said , which has been supported by the majority of other contributors. I would however point out that most of this political correctness nonsense has it roots in modern day America, not Stalinist Russia.
