I`m not sure how it could have been much worse when you see what they did with Doctor Doom.

With regards to Batman Begins and Superman Returns, it seems 'respectful' equals sombre, dreary and leaden-footed. Only Michael Caine in the former had the nous to remember these things can be fun too.
Spider Man 1 & 2 were better balanced this way, as the alarming difference in profits prove.

I think Spider Man is probably the most popular character in the Marvel stable let alone all the heroes put together which probably accounts for why the movie also took more money then the others.
I hear there is plans in the works to make Thor The God Of Thunder...Now that will be interesting.

I saw the Spidey 3 trailer a few weeks ago on the Apple website and was mightily impressed...can't wait 'til next year to see this in the cinema! Also liking the look of the Ghost Rider movie as well!
The Fantastic Four movie (the new one) is on Sky Movies next month...I've not seen it, but it's gotta be better than the cheapo Roger Corman version that was made but never released in the early 90's...and yes, I've got a bootleg copy of that unreleased version! It's probably not as bad as everyone makes out, but at the time it was made the effects (even if the budget was bigger) meant it was a pretty weak effort. At least they made a decent effort at sticking to the source material...
If you want to know about upcoming rumors/projects for movies made from comic book sources, this is a pretty good site to check out...
Plenty of stuff in the pipeline, such as Iron Man & a live action version of the Avengers (no, not the old Patrick Macnee series!)...
Wouldn't mind seeing a movie of the Legion of Super-Heroes (just to show that I'm not just a Marvel fan), but I guess I'll have to make do with the animated version for now...

I dare say you're right, but it's also true to say Superman Returns and Batman Begins both underperformed, and it's really not difficult to see why.
btw - I'm a bit nonplussed with the Spiderman franchise so far, but this third one does look rather spiffy.
