Basically, I don't believe that '1 in 4' people are admitted to a mental hospital during their lifetime. I may believe that '1in 4' have been prescribed prozac for instance, but not hospitalization: due to mental illness.

In 30 years, I know of no one that has been hospitalized due to a mental health issue. Maybe I'm just lucky?

By your estimates, there are nearly as many people hospitalized due to mental health problems (1 in 4), as there are people recieving cancer treatment. (1 in 3)

Now, if I can recall...... In previous posts you've been outspoken when it's come to legalizing a few illegal substances -namely 'cannabis'- which is clamed to worsen mental health problems, and you've also given the 'thumbs-up' to the public being allowed easier access to handguns, to protect themselves from burglars.

Now I'm not argueing the point that mental health issues aren't rising a little, due to a 'high pressure society' that we all live in, but if your estimates are correct, you think it's ok to give legal access to 'cannabis and guns', to a population where 25% of people have mental health issues?

Even the whackiest of hippies would think thats a little bit dangerous, wouldn't you think?

Mike - you're saying the Amish don't suffer from mental illness? I'd doubt that - it's a pretty restrictive lifestyle they live.

That's a good point Keith. It comes from having (once) run a major empire, and from being an island race - we have a vastly inflated idea of our importance on the planet.

It don't mean they suffer mental illness though. I drive a truck through Amish country from time to time and as far as I know they seem to be happy with the way they live and I'll stretch to say they may have their own support systems for that kind of thing if they do suffer.

It's also the case that mental illness isn't evenly spread. It is much more prevalent among (for example) Jewish people and black people. It's also more prevalent among working class people than middle class people. I know people in all these groups so perhaps that explains the difference between your experience and mine.

Knowing several during your lifetime still wouldn't make it '1 in 4' I wouldn't think. Btw, I have lived in a working class, muslim/black community (70% muslim, 15% Black) for 22 years.

On a side note: If you send people mad, that worries me greatly! I'm not saying 'why' though !wink!

From memory, black and Jewish people are massively more subject to mental illness than the average - something like tenfold I think. In my parents' generation of Jews (those born in the 40s/50s) the amount of depression and schizophrenia is enormous. I'd guess due to being raised by people who lived through the holocaust. A friend of the family is in and out of mental hospital - she was born in a concentration camp.

Not sure why I might send people mad... as I'm sure you can tell from my posts, I'm normally a very easy-going character. !wink!
