I met Dave and Martin after a concert way back in 1984.
I saw them yet again at Birmingham for their Playing The Angel tour - still as superb as ever

Saw one of their 1983 vids on VH1 today..set in a shop ..it all looked soooo dated!.Video recorders on shelves the size of houses,7 inch singles on racks,dingey!!

But thats vintage stuff Mcfister...Dated stuff isnt all that bad. Dingey can sometimes be good. Adds flavour

Great band that wouldn't be given the time to develop now. Overcame the loss of Vince Clarke who proved with subsequent output in Yazoo, Assembly and Erasure that he's a consummate pop artist. Martin Gore developed into a great writer with a fairly unique signature (people who know DM better than I do will be able to comment on the division of labour, but I think Gore tends to write the lyrics).
Also, I think DM share publishing which means they get an equal share of royalties. I once read that DM worked with Mute for many years without a formal contract - a handshake with Daniel Miller was sufficient for all parties. It would seem then that they're a great band and men of honour too.

Elvis Costello arrived two hours late, spent another hour and a half getting drunk in his changing room and then played a 20 minute set of essentially country & western music before staggering off stage never to be seen again. The crowd (about 1500 people who had paid ?15 a ticket... a sizeable ammount back in 1981) went mental.
Joe Jackson was just an arrogant c***. He also only did about a 20 minute set when he went off. When he came back on he asked the crowd what they wanted to hear as an "encore" and everyone called for "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" to which he replied if anyone wanted to hear it they should go out and buy the single. He then played a couple of covers and went off. Again, the crowd were not best pleased.
