Humans have a morbid curiosity and it's pretty normal in all walks of life.
Cattle will run from the lion until one is caught. They then watch one of their herd being killed nervously when it may be better to run away a bit further. Baboons watch one of their own from the bank, while a crocodile pulls the head off another baboon. Not concious acts but maybe an essential behavioural act? Was it Plato who said 'man learns through suffering'? Something Christianity took on board and they're probably right. Watching the death of your own kind is maybe a natural trait to keep you on your toes?
We all see crowds around accidents, and cars slowing down on the motorway. I've not viewed Saddam's hanging yet, but I can't promise I won't give in to the curiosity, even though I was against his execution.
