That's a common Police tactic they use on people with little or no experience with dealing with them in that they threaten you with arrest unless you comply with them.

My answer is that you have to have evidence to be able to arrest somebody and if you had that they wouldn't be asking you questions they would have arrested you on the spot.

It's 95% of the time a bluff. Call the bluff back. If they do then they better have good evidence otherwise they're fucked.

For example a few years ago I was out walking my dog on Boxing Day at about 10pm when a cop car pulled up alongside me and shouted something like "where are you going and what are you doing".

It was so bloody obvious that I declined to answer and carried on walking.

Both coppers got out and one shouted for to come back and said that they had received a call claiming somebody had been acting suspiciously and tried to enter several houses.

"Did they give a description of this person" I replied. "No no don't tell me. It was a male, wearing blue jeans and a black coat". I said.

Yes was the reply. How bloody convenient was mine.

Absolute bollocks. I refused to give my details and told them if they dared to arrest me then I'd make an official complaint and that they'd be filling out paperwork for the next month if they did so.

I walked on around the corner and went home.

It was absolute tosh. They hadn't received a call. They were just bored on Boxing Day.

What you should have done is;

a) Telephone a high-powered and very slick lawyer with whom you sit in an interview room down at "The Precint" looking very smug and answering, "No comment" to all their questions in a fog of cigarette smoke.

b) Unleash hell upon their asses with a pump-action shotgun or, even better, an M16 with grenade launcher. You yell, "You'll never take me alive you slags" as you take out copper after copper gradually retreating upstairs with helicopters circling overhead. Eventually cornered you can either turn the gun on yourself or go down in a hail of bullets and try to take one last filth with you.

Basically you had a golden opportunity to enjoy a Hollywood moment and you blew it.

I probably shouldn't laugh (I'd probably shit myself if they banged on my door for no reason!!) but that was well funny!

I'm talking in real life here but I love the one where the police ask people to make a voluntary statement and if they don't then they would arrest them as they had evidence to do so.

If they had the evidence then they would have arrested them. However there are people who fall for it but as I said these are people who are wet behind the ears when it comes to the old bill.

The fact is the old bill try to pressure and intimidate novices and it works on some.

I remember one time years ago when I got arrested for getting into a scrape and I was advised by the police that I had a right to a solicitor. When I said yes I'd like a solictor please the copper went off on a rant of how "we could have sorted this all out in 5 minutes but no you had to insist on a solictor".

I just smiled and asked him to let me know when the solicitor arrived.

Most of my personal dealings with the police came over 20 years ago and since then I've got married and had 3 sons and calmed down alot but I aint no mug and know how it all works but they still think they can pull the metaphorical wool over my eyes on the occasions since when our paths have crossed.

Totally agree with you in that most people who have dealt with the police will tell you that they have a very low opinion of them.

As you said they aren't very intelligent but they reckon they are. They try every (cheap) trick in the book including the old good cop bad cop routine and if anybody has any experience of them then they are never going to fall for it but they still try it on.

I'm not proud of my past but I did come off a council estate and it's easy to fall into it all. That said I managed to get away from all that but it hasn't changed my opinion of the police one bit.

Only customs officers are worse.

The voluntary statement helps you more tho if your guilty, same as pleading guilty.

Last time i was arrested, They sent multiple police cars, and vans to my house and at least 8 coppers, I wasnt there only know what my family and neighbours told me. They was told i was at work, they asked where and loads more questions and then left a phone number.

I got a phone call at work, off my family telling me to call the police and what had happened, so i called, they asked me to come in at 8am, so i told em i don't finish work til 2am, can we make it lunch time ? So they agreed like nothing was wrong, I contacted Tuckers my solictors told them the score and turned up at the station the next day 12pm Sunday Morning, they asked to interview me voluntarily not been arrested yet.

Turns out they had CCTV, Crimewatch (tv) (which meant witnesses) and Prints on me, I was so nailed you could have called me Jesus, but when it came to court, because i turned myself in voluntarily, made a voluntary statement 'openly and honestly', I escaped with Magistrates Court rather than Crown, then at Magistrates I pleaded guilty to like 6 offences and asked the others be 'TIC' (Taken into consideration), and got away with a big fine and suspended sentance, and my solictor said with the couple of dozen charges against me, if i'd been arrested and stuff i'd have served time.
