I thought McLaren was a ludicrous choice for England manager, but I can't see anyone else doing much better.
For the brutal truth is that we are no longer producing enough players who are good enough, one reason why the absurdly over-rated Premiership is awash with foreign imports.

That's very true. I always laugh when I hear people say the Premiership is the best league in the world. It may be fast. It may be exciting. It certainly has the highest paid players. But technically the Premiership is poor.
Because of the intensity of the game, few players are capable of keeping the ball, and it doesn't seem to matter as the ball will be won back a few seconds later.
Most of the big clubs prefer to spend money on ready-made imports than on nurturing home grown talent. Even the good youngsters coming through tend to be foreign.
Player valuations are just crazy. David Nugent is valued at about ?6 million. I'm sure he's a talented youngster and maybe if Preston get promoted we'll see him in the Prem next season and see how good he really is... but ?6 million??? No wonder teams look at cheaper foreigners.
However, having said all that, given Northern Ireland beat Spain recently, a second-string England side should have done better than lose 0-1 at home.
That they did is partly down to the over-inflated egos of the players, but mostly down to the lack of any direction from the management team.
I know there were many players unavailable, but even with a long injury list Peter Crouch should NEVER EVER be included in an England squad. I would rather see Scunthorpe's Billy Sharp in an England shirt than the lanky streak of piss that is Crouch. 6'7" and he gets out jumped by players that are 5' 11" !!! What a fucking waste of space. And don't come out with the bollocks of 12 goals in as many games... they were all against crap sides and only one looked like he actually meant to score.
It's also time to stop playing both Gerrard and Lampard. Two guys paid close to ?200,000 a week between them and they STILL can't work out how to play together!!!
I know Cole and Bridge were absent, but what could anyone possibly learn that they didn't already know from having Neville at let back? And why refuse to play Barry there from the start ony to move him to left back 10 minutes after coming on? It all smacks of "HELP!!! I'm out of my depth. I don't know what to do next"
The tabloid press don't help, either. I mean, who the fuck would want the job knowing that every little detail of your private life will be looked into. No wonder the only person willing to do it is complete tosser! England will never get a half-decent manager so long as the red tops are looking for front page rather than back page news and the FA are full of stuffed shirts and "buggins turn" men!

Technically your correct in that the skill level isn't quite what you'd find in Spain but I know which league I'd rather watch and after all isn't football also in the entertainment business?

How very true and a sad indictment on not only the lower league clubs but also the smaller premier league clubs. If these clubs were more realistic in their player valuations then the money would stay in the game in England and filter down through the leagues as those selling clubs buy from the leagues below them but as you say why pay ?7m for Nugent when you can get a proven international striker from abroad for about the same. Why take the chance?

Don't agree here. Players aren't going to bust a gut in a midweek friendly international with club games coming thick and fast especially this time of the season. How many players also got instructions from their club managers to "save" something for Saturday?. Quite a few I reckon.

Crouch aint my cup of tea but who else do you play? Bent's injured, Defoe don't cut it for me so who else?

I have to agree with you here and one has to be left out and for me it's time Gerrard played central.

But isn't that why they get paid the big bucks? I mean the lame excuse Scolari gave about not wanting his life turned upside down by the english media was rubbish. The brazil job is worse for media intrusion than ours and by all accounts when in that job Scolari had 10-20 journalists/photographers following his every move from the moment he left home in the morning until he returned home in the evening and that job didn't come with a ?3m+ yearly salary as compensation for all the flak.
