Ok, if it's a bad area, at night, and you're over 60.............and female..........or confined to a wheelchair it's fair enough.

I live (and drive) in Germany, Lizard. And a lot of German Autobahns are worse than the UK's motorways. Though granted that's still not saying much for the UK's motorways.

Many of them still have long stretches of just 4 lanes (that's 4 in total - 2 in each direction).

There are no cats eyes or reflectors to demarcate the lanes and central reservations.

The painted white lane lines are often badly worn away.

There's no illumination to speak of - including sometimes of roadsigns (drive across the border from Luxembourg into Germany at night, and it's as if someone suddenly turned off all the lights).

The surfacing often leaves a lot to be desired.

You can rarely go more than about 20 or 30 miles at a time without encountering some sort of roadworks or contraflow system (they've been widening some sections of the Autobahns in recent years, but it's a slow process that'll take years and years).

And "Autobahn tailgating" (at high speed, of course!) is a German national past-time.

All of which combined often makes German motorway driving a stressful and unpleasant experience - especially at night in the pissing rain.

You're not allowed to make out any European -or even worldwide- nation is in any way, any worse than the UK. It's in the FAQ's if you look hard enough.
