Being a musician is not like being a bricklayer or a postman. Musicians do not retire, save for injury or ill-health.

The violinist Milstein was still performing, and performing better than anybody else in the world at that time, at the age of eighty-three. Only injury curtailed his career. The pianist Rubinstein also played to packed audiences until shortly before his ninetieth birthday.

The pianist Horszovski produced a new recording of Bach, Schumann and Chopin, to great critical acclaim, at the age of ninety-nine.

Blues/rock guitarist Robin Trower continues to perform and tour, his powers completely undiminished, yet he turned sixty-two earlier this month. Indeed BB King only recently decided to stop his world tours, at the age of eighty, for health reasons.

Funny, I was just playing his old 'Honky Chateau' album from 1972. Jeez its so good. But like Sir Paul and Stevie, everything they wrote past about 30 - 35 was shit.

Don't forget that being a musician isn't just about writing - there is also playing/singing.

After all, Sinatra never wrote any songs.
