George Bush is not an idiot. But he chose one as his vice-president to let the America public get used to the idea of having a cretin at the top, so that when the time came little Georgie W. could get the job.

The question of Bush's intelligence seems moot to me. I think we have to remember that he is only the spokesman for particular vested interests as all American Presidents have been and doesn't make policy just mouths it-badly as it happens. So he doesn't need intelligence. Although he does appear to be illiterate.
The real sadness is that Blair whose intelligence is not in question follows in the footsteps of Major and Thatcher by serving those same interests- although for less personal reward.Blair has used his intelligence to put his interests above the people who elected him and who he is supposed to represent. The alternative is to think that he was stupid enough to be fooled by all the nonsense he trotted out to justify England subsidising American foreign policy by joining in the invasion of Iraq.
Which makes Blair the Organ grinders Monkey's Monkey and the Brish Population the losers.
I'm sure Tone is now looking forward to retiring from office and pulling in the fees for all his good work on behalf of the American oil Industry.

Well no Bush is not an idiot, even if he occasionally does 'idiotic' things in foreign policy.
By the same token he's been both a lucky, and a poor president.Had 9/11 not occurred he'd been out the door in 2004,just like Daddy,he couldn't follow a sucessful 2 term President, that though is never easy.
Easy to forget that America is still both the military/economic superpower of the world.Perhaps not so strong/unrivalled as in 2003,but still a long way ahead of the pack. They can afford to do stupid things in Iraq, and still have a GNP growing faster than the European union.
It'll be a democrat next, they'll be more isolationist abroad, mend a few bridges, probally act too little when the real problems need answering, just as Bill C left Bosnia too long, and only hit hard Iraq when his codger went public:)
Still Europe,Russia and China have done little to shape world policy, and Bush saw a chance with both Afghanistan/Iraq,even if the latter was his 'Bridge too far'.
Think he'll be as easily forgotten as Lyndon B,Gerald F,and of course Daddy, probally best, you don't move onwards by gloating over mistakes, not if you want to stay on top of the world.
