Yea I agree that 36 seems a bit harsh but the way I look at it how many times have you got away with doing 40 or nearer 50 in a 30..everyone speeds and sometimes you get caught..bit like yellow lines parking

So, can I ask just where your personal tolerance of law breaking applies?

Let's start from the aspect of civil law.......

Is it okay to break the speed limit by one, two, three, five, ten or whatever miles per hour? If you break the speed limit and don't get caught, is that okay, or do you need to kill someone before it becomes serious?

Now let's move on to criminal law......

If housebreaking okay, but would you draw the line at burglary (which is a totally different offence)?

Is assault okay and GBH wrong?

Is manslaughter okay but murder wrong?

The point is this: People seem these days to position themselves at various point along a continuum, stating that to break certain laws is okay and reasonable, but to break others is bad. Where does that come from?

So, where do the people who post on this forum think that breaking this or that law is okay but breaking a different law is unacceptable?

Surely, breaking any law is as bad as any other law. Or is it?

Did my post of witnessing a driver speeding at 37mph and killing an innocent girl have no impact at all? Or is speeding at 37mph and not killing anyone therefore okay?

The problem with many speed limits is that they are quite arbitrary.

Near me there is a stretch of road which used to have the national speed limit. Now parts of it are 40, then 30, then 40 again, with several Gatsos of course.

Motorists have become cynical that speed limits have been manipulated to ensure that the cameras get revenue, rather than to aid road safety.

It is far safer to drive at 32 in a 30 zone whilst observing the road ahead, than to drive at 28 with your eyes fixed on the speedo for fear of getting flashed by the dreaded Gatso.

I'd go with the whole cameras are there to generate cash argument IF there was a camera on every stretch of motorway but there isn't.

I'd also go with the argument that people have accidents because they keep there eyes glued on the speedo but the reality is if we did this during our driving test we would have failed just as we would we would had we broken the speed limit while taking it.

I am certain we can all name roads that we feel don't have an appropriate speed limit on them but the simple reality is if your not sure stick to the 30 limit and you don't get a fine.

Everyone of us is shown how to drive correctly if we chose to ignore how to do it after we have passed the test then we should be prepared to face the consequence of our actions.

I can understand doing, say, 45 in a 20-zone and getting busted. I would take the rap and hang my head in shame.

I got busted for doing 84 on the motorway, keeping up with the flow of traffic in doing so.

In 12 years of having a licence, my first three points. I am the Dunfermline Athletic of the Roads.
