Deuce,
I have been to these forums but no-one has explained how to get rid of Vista. I can't get online with my new laptop because my Motorola Phone Tools does not work and as I am on the run around Europe.

I am not computer literate just a filmaker.

How can I delete Vista and install XP?

Getting desperate!

Mike.

XP cannot install to a Vista formatted volume due to minor changes in the
implementation of NTFS, so what you will need is a clean install.

First, you'll need a full version disk of XP with Product Key (OEM version) , then boot the system with the CD and start setup. At the point where you choose the installation location, delete the existing system partition/volume. Then create a new one from the free space, format it (quick format is ok here), and proceed to install.

You will loose all data and any programs installed will need to be re-installed. You may have driver compatibility issues and I heartily recommended making a Vista Rescue Disk just in case things go the way of the pear.

Alternatively try a Linux 'Live' CD. Simply burn an ISO disc of Ubuntu, pop in your cd drive and reboot.

(Ubuntu will also send you a free disc if you don't want to or can't download)

Jacques,

I have genuine original Windows XP professional CD with product key but Vista will not allow me to run setup.exe.

Also in accessories, or anywhere else. I could find, I see no way of creating a "rescue disc." There is only an option - "backing up one's files."

I expect Vista can be deleted but at the moment I still cannot do it.

Ubuntu looks attractive but will I be able to edit films and so on? Also I will not be able to transfer the contents of my old laptop to my new one and would I still be able to use Motorola Phone tools to get online with my mobile phone?

I doubt if Vista would let me load Ubuntu anyway.

Mike.
