He just turned his back on the obvious and commercial, Steve. To be honest, I thought he'd given up decades ago until the Beeb recently showed 30th Century Man. That distinctive voice is as strong as ever.

Even when he was in the wilderness, though, he was part of popular culture, mainly due to the various vocalists obviously inspired by him. Julian Cope may be the most obvious impersonator, but there are echoes of Scott in David Bowie, for example.

I kind of like the idea of someone heading off and doing his own thing without caring what the listening public think of it.

Recall the days when a single wasnt on a lp so i bought it then years later when cds came out it was a bonus track./

Used to buy lots of Greatest Gits when CD first came out but back to buying albums.

You weren't wrong about him experimenting

Just rescued a CD from the bargain bin from 1958/59 when he was a 15 year old.Amazing voice for someone that young
