Well as I said I do not condone anybody who goes down as if they have been shot in the balls, BUT as I said this was a "Fan" who caused all this mayhem (he could have had a knive or a bottle who knows) and NOT a player and it does set a very dangerous precedence for any loony to run on the pitch and assault a player.
I thought players should be protected at all costs - but seemingly not, as long as you don't attack the referee you will escape relatively unpunished.

Celtic did get away lightly, but I think the 'previous' of Celtic fans, who have had various commendations, counted in their favour.

This hasn't set a precedent- as it was in the Champions League, it was high-profile- but fans entering the field of play is not a phenomenon. The moron in question posed as much threat as a streaker; we received a 'streakers fine', commensurate with the offence. In fact, a streaker is more offensive- indecent exposure................ and they often approach players and playfully slap them in jest.

Dida's behaviour was shocking- he was trying to get the club disciplined with that little performance; disgraceful.

If the shoe was on the other foot? A fine would be expected- but Boruc, or any player with a bit of integrity, wouldn't do that. Boruc, if anything, would give the guy as good as he got.

It's going back a few years, but I recall an incident involving Celtic in the Cup Winner's Cup in the '84-'85 season. I can't remember exactly which round it was, but I think it was quite early on.

In any case, having lost the first (away) leg, they'd beaten Rapid Vienna fair and square at Celtic Park by the required margin (plus a goal or two, IIRC) in the return, when towards the end, some twat in the crowd threw a coin that hit one of the Rapid players.

There was a UEFA enquiry, and the governing body nullified the result and ordered the second leg replayed at a "neutral" venue - which of all places ended up being Old Trafford so it wasn't really "neutral" at all, given the ties between the two clubs and the ease with which trainloads of Jocks could just hop on a train to attend.

So everyone was expecting it to be a cake-walk for Celtic.

However - quite bizzarely - Rapid won the match 1-0, their goal coming on the break after Celtic had just hit the woodwork at the other end. And straight away guess what happened - yep, a Celtic 'fan' ran onto the pitch and attacked the Rapid goalkeeper, really laying into him (the Dida incident was nothing by comparison).

I remember this quite well because I was at university (Salford) and living a bus ride away from Old Trafford at the time, and went to this UEFA-ordered rematch (it was in the days when it was easy for casual punters, students included, to get tickets for big matches at a sensible price).

Of course (football being football - as Sam alludes to above), Rapid then progressed all the way to that season's final, where they lost to Everton.

It might just be me, but I don't see the big issue here being the fan getting onto the park. No way that can 100% be prevented.

The big problem I see, is that the fan then got off the park, out of Parkhead without being caught and then was only really caught because he turned himself in.

Talk about worryingly bad security.

The Scum up here highlighted the steward who pushed the offender back into the crowd. His day job is with Reliance.

To be fair to him I also freak out when I am approached by Celtic fans. !whistle!
