I'm certainly no expert in computing expert either
surfing with just 256k of ram all be it on a desktop PC I'd kill for 2GB ;-)

Read a recent(july 2007) comparison survey in computing Mag APC
of notebooks(same as laptops?) and the other variable was the battery life when you open and use multiple applications

Some even with seemingly excellent set-ups(CPU,RAM etc) had poor battery life which proves its easy to be conned

What laptop are you using?

its a hp pavilion dv2000 intel centrino core2duo cpu 2gb ram 160gb hdd and nvidia graphics if that means anything to you deuce
i bought it a couple of days after vista come out so about 8 months old
ive hardly used it and already the hdd is down to 103gb free from 143 total as new it uses shit loads for system restore although you can get that space back if you turn the restore thing off i think
christ knows why it uses so much for restore because my xp desktop dosent
my desktop is over a year old with160gb hdd and has been used loads more than laptop and desktop still has about 115 gb free
strange

Its cutting edge stuff for 8 months ago

Sad to say the CPUs are now going from DUOs to Quadcore(no idea of the benfits apart from a big hole in your wallet)

Similar with the Ram...from DD2 to DD3 with the major benefit being significant(30percent)less consumption of power which should mean longer battery life on notebooks

My system restore is a pain as well but not running it isn't an alternative just a recipe for disaster.Trouble is if you ever needed that extra 40gb for storage your computer would be a bitch to defragment let alone keep stable

I've heard of defrags taking all night not to mention running cleaning software like to remove any excess junk left behind by uninstalled programs etc
