The slave workers were starved to death. The old and weak were sent straight to the gas chambers, killed, and their bodies incinerated. The young and fit were worked to death. That's why you can see people who survived Auschwitz, they were picked as slave labour, and were lucky enough still to be alive when the Russians got there in January 1945. The Nazis' plan was that in the end no-one would get out of a place like Auschwitz alive, but some were killed on day one, others were kept alive for a few months whilst they were worked to death.
