I think it was down to two reasons.
One was that folk and folk rock was rather big at that time: Eagles, Fairport Convention, Byrds, Sandy Denny, Jackson Browne, Dylan of course and many others.
Compared to today it had quite a mainstream following and I think Nick's music just got lost in the huge folk and folk rock output of the day.
Second was that he was very shy and would not do many (or any) live concerts to back up his albums. If he did do a live concert he would shuffle on stage, mumble a few announcements, quietly sing his songs, and shufle off.
This made the albums difficult for the record companies to promote.
Funnily enough parts of his songs often appear as backing music to various TV programs.
My wife was watching a gardening program a few weeks ago, and all of a sudden some acoustic guitar music was played, and I shouted "hey that's Nick Drake".
Some consolation for his family that he is still remembered today.
He is buried near where I live, Tanworth In Arden in Warwickshire.
