I wasn't being pedantic as there was no fault. I was just saying that we call it Football, without thinking. My mate, only today, popped round to see if I wanted picking up Sunday to go to the pub and watch 'the footy', as it was the top 4 in action.
If either of us had mentioned the word 'soccer' there'd have been an uncomfortable air, stares, tops off, punches thrown, lighter fuel and matches abused, and the kitchen to redecorate.
You do not use the word 'soccer' on these islands my friend, without a conscious decision to do so.....unless you grew up using the word 'soccer'....and you didn't grow up using that word in this country.
P.s. On the Hatton thing: You still missed my point. I never said that to admire Mayweathers boxing ability is un-english; I said the gloating and glee you seemed to take in Hatton's demise as being un-english.
Comprende?

hj, you could avoid all the excuses by just saying you are a part-timer, a fly-by-nighter, probably a fair-weather fan. A pub politician by the sounds of things too.

Defo not English Fudgey.
Remember what he said about Hatton losing?
Quote: "YOUR boy took one hell of a beating tonight!"
Weird terminology coming from an Englishman, talking about a fellow Englishman.

I'm English,but not typical
Maybe English in terms of place of birth, but has a foreign lineage. Definitely not a bona-fide Englishman, though.
Be much better to applaud good football and boxers, regardless of their nationality,or club.
A typical cop-out of the dispassionate, or someone not fully behind their nation/team/ whatever. The prawn-sandwich, nouveau fan.

Soccer is the term used in OZ for football so the locals wouldn't mistake it for aussie Rules/football created back in the fifities from memory

Yeah, we know!!
But, why quote an anti-English rant, bask in it, then claim you're an Englishman?
You do have an odd way of establishing your national identity.
