I wasn't being pedantic as there was no fault. I was just saying that we call it Football, without thinking. My mate, only today, popped round to see if I wanted picking up Sunday to go to the pub and watch 'the footy', as it was the top 4 in action.
If either of us had mentioned the word 'soccer' there'd have been an uncomfortable air, stares, tops off, punches thrown, lighter fuel and matches abused, and the kitchen to redecorate.
You do not use the word 'soccer' on these islands my friend, without a conscious decision to do so.....unless you grew up using the word 'soccer'....and you didn't grow up using that word in this country.
P.s. On the Hatton thing: You still missed my point. I never said that to admire Mayweathers boxing ability is un-english; I said the gloating and glee you seemed to take in Hatton's demise as being un-english.
