Vistas security is certainly ramped up but nothing is impregnable

Seems anything microsoft create eventually has some vulnerability
exposed

Windows defender is a good laugh
Its commercially compromised from what i've read
tells you to Ignore scumware others tell you to remove
Is piss poor at detecting rootkits

spysweeper runs rings around it in my experience(ran windows defender on XP and found nought)
Then ran avgs anti-spyware and found plenty

Stay calm. Don't patch yet. There are no immediate threats, if you use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. (You DO use Firefox, don't you?) Let's see who screams and why...

I haven't had the promised Windows security patch yet.

I use firefox and explorer.
I have the updates installed just gotta restart the machine for them to take effect ... I am sure I will get to that restart button before the end of the week.
When installing updates like these always make a restore point in case it totally blimeys your whole machine, vista should create a restore point automatically for you.

Some of these virus creators should get themselves a girlfriend.

Nope. I have Firefox installed, but I've not used it now for about 2 months. I use Opera now. I like the simpler adblocking, and wand capabilities for passwords & usernames. It fires up quicker than Firefox as well.

Firefox is great, but I'd got that many different extansions aand plug-ins that I found I played more with these than actual browsing!

I've even installed Opera on my Apple Powerbook.....and mobile phone.

It's sick.

At least then you can actually read what they updates are before you download them

The other thing which i wasn't aware of was the same day release of a huge update for windows office 2007

On the same day that Microsoft released a huge 218 MB patch to Office 2007, the folks in Redmond also released seven - count 'em - Security Bulletins. There's a summary here.

The Critical patches cover holes in DirectX (in every version of Windows, including Vista), Windows Media Format (WMF files, in every version of Windows including Vista), and this month's crop of Internet Explorer holes involving ActiveX controls (IE 5, 6 and 7, in every version of Windows including Vista). Kinda makes you wonder what the Vista guys were doing for the five years it took to hatch the product.

The merely Important patches are for Server Message Block version 2 (only applies if you are part of a domain), Message Queuing (in WinXP, not Vista), a hole in the Vista kernel (doesn't affect any other versions of Windows), and a Macrovision driver patch (which is also being offered by Macrovision).

This latter patch came about because Microsoft is shipping a third-party copy protection program along with Windows, so Microsoft is obliged to patch holes in the other company's software. I talked about it a month ago. If you use Macrovision, I suggest that you go to the Macrovision site and download their version of the patch. Copy protection is an insidious beast, eh?

Rounding out the crop, there were four non-security, high-priority updates on Microsoft Update (MU) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) and four non-security, high-priority updates for Windows and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 on WU and WSUS.
